(Richmond, VA) -- Witnesses are being called to the stand following the conclusion of opening statements in the corruption trial of former Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell and his wife, Maureen.
Prosecutors described to the jury today the lavish gifts and large loans the McDonnells received from then-Star Scientific CEO Jonnie Williams and the favors Williams allegedly received in return.
A defense attorney for the former governor called Bob McDonnell "an innocent man" and said that the federal government's case depends almost entirely on the testimony of Williams, who he called "dishonest."
First to take the stand was catering manager Ryan Greer. He described the wedding for the McDonnells' daughter, Cailin, which prosecutors say was paid for by Williams.
