(Richmond, VA) -- The Virginia Republican Party treasurer is resigning over a controversial Facebook post. Bob FitzSimmonds handed a resignation letter to party leaders Thursday night, saying no matter how careful he is, he will sometimes give non-Republicans the occasion to portray his "party in a bad light."
FitzSimmonds wrote on Facebook in response to a remark by President Obama praising Muslims, quote, "Exactly what part of our nation's fabric was woven by Muslims?" The now former GOP state party official says his two choices were to stop posting on social media or step down from his position.
Republican leaders had asked FitzSimmonds to step down earlier this year after he posted a crude statement on Facebook about State Delegate Barbara Comstock, (R-Fairfax).
