Cutler, CA _ The list of stores that may have sold fruit possibly contaminated by listeria has grown by two. The fruit was sold at a number of stores including Giant, Martins, Trader Joe's Wegmans, Costco and Walmart, and now Ralph's and Food 4 Less.
A number of food stores have removed some nectarines, peaches, and plums from the shelves after learning the fruit may be contaminated.
The announcement came after Wawona Packing Company, who supplied the stores with the fruit, initiated a voluntary recall over possible Listeria monocytogenes contamination, bacteria that can cause the rare but potentially fatal disease Listeriosis.
According to the CDC , “the disease primarily affects older adults, pregnant women, newborns, and adults with weakened immune systems. However, rarely, persons without these risk factors can also be affected.”
The disease can cause high fever, severe headache, neck stiffness, nausea and miscarriages or stillbirths.
